Freedom and Responsibility
Scott Miker
Life often feels paradoxical. Less often feels like more. The easy road tends to be more difficult in the long run.
One that I come across frequently is the idea that freedom and responsibility are linked. If we are irresponsible, we tend to lose freedoms. But if we take care of what we need to, we gain more freedom to do what we want in life.
I teach this to my children, but I also find that it is a helpful reminder to us adults as well. If I take care of my health, I will have more freedom to do what I want, go where I want, and take part in activities that I choose.
If I disregard my health, I will be limited in what I can do with my life. If I continue down the unhealthy path, I may find my freedom to walk goes away. I may even find myself confined to a hospital bed.
We all want freedom, but we often shun responsibility when it is challenging. But we need to understand the link between the two and embrace the ability to choose our life’s direction.
